Colorado Horsecare Foodbank helps keep more than 100 horses with their owners—See us in Booth #944 at Denver’s Rocky Mountain Horse Expo March 12-14, 2010

Evergreen, March 10, 2010: In its first 10 months of operation, the Colorado Horsecare Foodbank™ has helped keep more than 100 horses with their owners by providing feed and other equine services, giving owners under financial duress a reprieve from the worry and fear of having to sell, relinquish, or destroy animals that offer strength, hope, and support in tough times.

As a relatively new organization, the Colorado Horsecare Foodbank has been tremendously successful in its first year of operation, raising more than $50,000 in donations and goods in 2009. Its spring fundraiser, Flowers for Food™, kicks off at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo. The Colorado Horsecare Foodbank sells flower baskets, and 100 percent of the profits go toward keeping Colorado horses with their owners. Attendees of the Expo can preorder these beautiful flower baskets for pickup in late spring.

From Grand Junction to Rush to Greeley—and all across Colorado, the Foodbank has numerous stories of support. In one case, parents gave their two horse-loving daughters a horse to teach them responsibility. Then this two-income family became one, and the horse, Comanche, had to go. The Foodbank has kept Comanche with the family that treasures him. Dan, the father of the two daughters shared, “Comanche is part of our family, and he’s a family member we can’t replace. When my wife lost her job, it was very difficult to keep him, but he brings joy into the lives of my daughters. Thanks to the Foodbank, we were able to keep Comanche, and I would do anything to help my daughters.”

One woman was drastically impacted by the economic collapse. Forced to sell her home and many of her belongings, she could not face saying goodbye to her horse. Pride nearly prevented her from reaching out to the Foodbank, but the love and strength she found in owning a horse helped her place the call and receive help. Samantha shared, “The Colorado Horsecare Foodbank knows what is needed to help horses and their owners who are in distress. They have been a godsend to me."

The stories—and the need—are endless, and this nonprofit has received amazing support to sustain its mission. The Colorado Horsecare Foodbank is excited to partner with Rocky Mountain Horse Expo to keep ‘horses in the spotlight.’ A video that showcases more of these heartwarming stories will be running in Booth #944 at the Rocky Mountain Horse Expo, and is also available on the organization’s Web site at www.horsefoodbank.org.
